Art takes a Fullbright professorship in Munich and brings the whole family of eight to Germany for a year.

von Frisch was the Nobel Prize winning honey bee researcher that Art had met in Austria in 1945. From family memories: von Frisch's children said they would have starved to death if Art hadn't smuggled food to them right after the war. By now, Art had figured out that salmon find their way back to their birth stream, using their sense of smell. At this point he was trying to find out how the salmon find their way in a huge ocean, back to the mouth of the correct major river. Navigation using sun or stars?

von Frisch était le chercheur sur les abeilles lauréat du prix Nobel qu'Art avait rencontré en Autriche en 1945. D'après des souvenirs de famille : les enfants de von Frisch ont dit qu'ils seraient morts de faim si Art ne leur avait pas fait passer de la nourriture en contrebande juste après la guerre. À ce moment-là, Art avait compris que le saumon retrouvait son chemin de naissance en utilisant son odorat. À ce stade, il essayait de découvrir comment les saumons se frayaient un chemin dans un immense océan, jusqu'à l'embouchure de la bonne rivière principale. Navigation par soleil ou étoiles ?
